Live More with Shared Lives was tested across all ten Greater Manchester boroughs, supporting around 70 people living with dementia and their families.
People were matched with approved Shared Lives carers around personality and interests. The independent evaluation reports improved mood, confidence, choice, independence, and social connection. Families described respite that felt psychologically real because support rested on a trusted relationship, and regular contact also helped identify changes and practical problems earlier.
The evaluation estimates £5.96 of social value for every £1 invested, with most of the estimated value coming from improved wellbeing. That is a social-value estimate rather than a direct cash saving, and the programme's next test is how well the approach can be sustained and extended.
The practical proposition is striking: support beginning before crisis, organised around ordinary life and a consistent relationship, rather than waiting for needs to fit a more intensive service response.
