An Independent Library Report for England encourages Commissioners to consider a ‘libraries first’ approach.
The Libraries Taskforce, working with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Local Government Association, has published this report as a statement of the current government’s vision for public libraries in England. It is intended to give a focus for collaborative action, and to identify how libraries contribute to a range of local and national priorities.
The report states that libraries should be integral to all public service strategies, and should promote themselves as an asset not a cost to service commissioners. It estimates a saving of £27.5m per year to the NHS through public library services, urging commissioners to consider a ‘libraries first’ approach when planning services for their communities.
